Unexplained Mysteries

BACKDROP

The Franklin Expedition

In the summer of 1845, two ships sailed proudly out of England, heading toward one of the last great unknowns on Earth.

Their mission was bold and dangerous: to find the Northwest Passage, a sea route through the Arctic that would connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. If successful, it would change global trade forever.

The ships were called HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. On board were 129 men, led by an experienced officer, Sir John Franklin.

They were confident. They were prepared. And they would never return.

This is the mystery of the Lost Franklin Expedition.

✏ Bold

✏ Sea route

✏ Arctic

✏ Atlantic

✏ Pacific

✏ Expedition 探险队

At first, everything seemed to go according to plan.

Franklin’s ships were strong, reinforced to survive ice. They carried enough food for several years. They even had steam engines, a modern technology at the time, to help them move through difficult waters.

After leaving England, they stopped briefly in Greenland. Letters were sent home. Spirits were high.

That was the last confirmed contact with the expedition.

Months passed. Then years. No news arrived.

At first, the British government remained calm. Arctic exploration was slow, and delays were expected. But as time passed, concern grew. By 1848, it was clear that something had gone terribly wrong.

✏ Reinforced

✏ Steam engines

✏ Remained calm

Search expeditions were sent out.

What they found only deepened the mystery.

The first clues came from Inuit people living in the Arctic. They spoke of strange ships trapped in the ice. They described starving white men dragging boats across frozen land. Some even reported seeing bodies.

At the time, many European officials dismissed these stories. They trusted written records more than oral accounts. But later, these Inuit reports would prove to be incredibly important.

In 1850, search teams discovered the first physical evidence: three graves on a small island called Beechey Island. The graves belonged to members of Franklin’s crew who had died early in the expedition.

The graves were carefully built. This suggested that, at least in the beginning, the crew was organised and disciplined.

But beyond this point, the trail grew darker.

✏ Inuit

✏ Trapped 受困

✏ Bodies 尸体

✏ Dismissed

✏ Oral accounts

✏ Physical evidence 物证

✏ Trail

In 1859, a search expedition led by Francis McClintock made a shocking discovery on King William Island.

They found a small written note — the only official record left by Franklin’s expedition.

The note revealed a tragic story.

At first, it said, the ships had been trapped in ice since 1846. Then, in a later message written around the edge of the paper, the situation became much worse.

Sir John Franklin was dead.

More than 20 other men had also died.

The remaining crew, now led by Captain Francis Crozier, had abandoned the ships in April 1848. They planned to march south toward safety.

Think about that for a moment.

Dozens of men, weak from hunger and cold, leaving their ships and walking across one of the harshest environments on Earth.

They carried boats, supplies, and hope.

But they were already in serious trouble.

Over the years, more evidence was found.

Skeletons appeared along the route the men had taken. Some were lying face down in the snow, as if they had collapsed while walking. Others were found near makeshift camps.

One of the most disturbing discoveries came later, when scientists studied the bones more closely.

They found cut marks.

✏ Abandon

✏ Weak from 因...

✏ Harshest environments

✏ Skeletons

✏ Collapsed

✏ Makeshift 临时的

✏ Disturbing

✏ Cut marks

This suggested that, in their final desperate moments, some members of the expedition may have turned to cannibalism to survive.

It is a shocking idea. But in extreme conditions, when food is gone and death is close, humans can make unimaginable choices.

The Arctic is not forgiving.

Temperatures can drop below minus 40 degrees Celsius. Storms can last for days. Ice can trap ships for years. Food is scarce. Darkness covers the land for long periods during winter.

Even the best-prepared expedition can fail.

But many questions remained.

✏ Cannibalism 食人

✏ Unimaginable

✏ Scarce

Why did the expedition fail so completely?

Why did the men abandon their ships, which might have offered some protection?

And what exactly caused so many deaths?

Modern science has helped provide some answers.

One major problem was food.

Although the ships carried large amounts of canned food, later analysis showed that the cans were poorly sealed. This allowed bacteria to enter, causing food poisoning. In addition, the solder used to seal the cans contained lead.

Lead is a toxic metal.

Studies of the crew’s remains have shown high levels of lead in their bones. Lead poisoning can cause confusion, weakness, and poor decision-making. It may have affected the crew’s ability to survive.

✏ Poorly sealed

✏ Bacteria 细菌

✏ Food poisoning

✏ Solder 焊料

✏ Lead

✏ Toxic metal

✏ Lead poisoning

Another factor was disease.

Conditions on the ships were crowded and cold. Illness could spread easily. Combined with poor nutrition, the men’s health would have weakened quickly.

And then there was the ice.

The Arctic ice trapped the ships for two full years. They could not move. Supplies slowly ran out. Hope began to fade.

At some point, the officers made a difficult decision: leave the ships and try to reach land.

It was a desperate gamble.

✏ Spread 传播

✏ Poor nutrition

✏ Fade

✏ Desperate gamble

For many years, the exact location of the ships remained unknown.

Then, in the 21st century, something remarkable happened.

In 2014, after years of searching, a Canadian team discovered the wreck of HMS Erebus beneath the cold Arctic waters.

Two years later, in 2016, HMS Terror was also found.

The ships were surprisingly well preserved, the freezing water had protected them. Inside, objects remained in place, almost as if time had stopped.

These discoveries confirmed many details of the story. They also opened new possibilities for research.

Divers and scientists continue to study the wrecks today, hoping to learn more about the final days of the expedition.

✏ Well preserved

✏ Wrecks 残骸

So what is the true mystery of the Franklin Expedition?

In some ways, we now know what happened.

The ships were trapped. The crew suffered from cold, disease, and possibly lead poisoning. They abandoned the ships and tried to escape. One by one, they died in the frozen wilderness.

But the emotional mystery remains.

What did those final days feel like?

Imagine the silence of the Arctic. The endless white landscape. The sound of ice cracking in the distance. The cold that never leaves your body.

Imagine watching your friends grow weaker. Imagine knowing that rescue may never come.

And still, they kept moving.

There is something deeply human in that.

The Franklin Expedition was not just a failure. It was also a story of courage and endurance. These men faced impossible conditions and continued to fight for survival.

It is easy to judge their decisions today, with modern knowledge and technology. But at the time, they were exploring the unknown.

They were pushing the limits of what humans believed was possible.

The story also teaches us an important lesson about exploration.

Nature is powerful.

No matter how advanced we think we are, we are still vulnerable. The Arctic, the ocean, the mountains — these environments demand respect.

The Franklin Expedition reminds us that ambition must be balanced with caution.

✏ Frozen wilderness

✏ Exploring the unknow

✏ Pushing the limits

✏ Vulnerable

✏ Ambition 野心

Today, the Northwest Passage that Franklin sought has been successfully navigated many times. Modern ships, supported by satellites and advanced equipment, can travel routes that once seemed impossible.

In a way, Franklin’s dream was achieved.

But the cost was high.

129 men set out on that journey. None returned.

Their story lived on through fragments: a note, a few graves, scattered bones, and the silent wrecks beneath the ice.

✏ Satellites 卫星

✏ Fragments 碎片

✏ Scattered bones

For more than 150 years, the mystery of their fate captured the imagination of the world.

And even now, as scientists continue to study the evidence, the story still feels haunting.

Because at its heart, it is not just about ships or maps.

It is about people.

People who sailed into the unknown, chasing a dream.

And who disappeared into the cold silence of the Arctic, leaving behind one of the greatest mysteries in the history of exploration.
