Hi, everyone and welcome back to Happy Hour. 欢迎回来酒馆. Hi, 安澜.

Hi, Lulu, hi, everyone. So today, can I propose a topic?

Sure, go ahead.

Because recently I've been on 大众点评trying to find decent restaurants, decent places to go, and it's getting so annoying. The fact that I wanna just know what the restaurant is like, but all I keep seeing are pictures of people posing with their food.

Oh Grandpa, is that a trend you don't understand ?

Well, I don't understand. I go on 大众点评because I want to see what the restaurant is like. I don't really care about what the person who went to the restaurant looks like.

You know what, let's just talk about these instagrammable food, is that what you wanna talk about or at least want to complain about ?

Complain about, yes.

我们今天就来说说这种 “网红美食”, with air quote. They're not always nice. They are just photo worthy.

Oh exactly. They're all instagrammable.

So this is what we're gonna be talking about today. We're gonna be talking about why some foods just become viral. And from my perspective, I don't really understand why.

You don't understand anything about pop culture anyways.

You don't hire me to understand about pop culture.

I got you covered.

Thank you.

So first of all, what 安澜 kept saying instagrammable, you know instagram. I'm sure even if you haven't gone on instagram, you know instagram.

If you don't know what the target audience is, think 小红书, it's basically the same idea. It is a lot of people just posting photos and notes on things. And instagrammable means that it is instagram worthy, usually some place that's photogenic.

Exactly. It looks attractive in photos for social media and this has become a big thing in recent years where you have certain dishes or restaurants, they're trying to make their food more instagrammable. So it doesn't really matter what it tastes like.

在中文就是网红,网红美学because it has traffic.

Exactly.

Even if it tastes awful, at least there will be lots of people lining up for it because they wanna take that picture.

Yeah, they might not eat it, but they'll take a photo of it .

And post it on social media, including instagram.

Yes.

You've said why food trends happen on instagram, I think it's first of all, you know ,with any food, it's not just a taste or the smell. It's also the visual appeal like bright colors or unusual shapes or unusual sizes or the sort of creative presentation. They make food photo worthy.

Oh exactly. It’s the whole idea eating a rainbow or rainbow foods.

Yeah, but rainbow foods are actually not that nice.

No, they're not. I prefer my food pretty much the same color.

Is it like fried chicken color?

Kinda yeah, various shades of brown. That's how I like my food.

Okay. 安澜 says that but he actually eats a lot of rabbit food. I've seen him eating like 白人饭 a lot.

Well yeah, that's kind of... you don't really get very colorful 白人饭. Let's be honest.

Yeah, we'll talk about that later. Talk about that later.

Another thing obviously social media the reason why these kind of instagrammable food this网红 food they got popular on social media, it's because of people like me, influencers.

Yeah, exactly. You're to blame.

No. But I'm not a food influencer, I don't go around and sharing this weird, bizarre food and try to get the traffic.

I have seen your wechat moments. Come on.

Yeah, but I don't use my wechat as an influencer. Ok. As my private personal wechat. And by the way, I do share on my wechat, my personal wechat, primarily food and drinks.

I share pictures of buildings.

Well, that's where we differ.

Yes.

So influencers and celebrities because they can make a dish or a specific food go viral, yeah.

I remember doing the 外刊 there was one article starting off with a whatchamacallit... starting off with a specific thing they sell at the Borough Market in London.

Oh Yes.

Chocolate strawberry, and you didn't hear me wrong. It literally is just pouring liquid chocolate on strawberry. I can easily do that at home. Exactly. And why am I paying ten quid to get a small plastic cup of that?

Exactly. You go to a supermarket, you get strawberries. You melt some chocolate, there you go. It is easy.

Exactly, but because influencers go there and say, oh this is amazing, you gotta try this, that makes it go viral.

So I could do the same with a cheese sandwich. I can just say go to this place and eat a cheese sandwich.

Yes, but no. Cheese sandwich is too normal. You have to I guess you have to dip a cheese sandwich in chocolate fountain or something. I know it sounds disgusting, isn't it?

But if anyone wants to try that and has a chocolate fountain, please let us know in a comment section what you think.

Even if it's just a chocolate fondue, we will, it will suffice. So influencers and celebrities.

But it's also health and lifestyle because all of these foods no one really puts on instagram unhealthy food. Do they ?

No, they do. okay. It depends on which crowd you are in. If you're more into fitness like the It Girl, super healthy glow, then you tend to eat things like vegan, like low calorie.

Keto .

Plant based or keto actually.

Okay, that explains a lot.

Keto actually contains a lot of fat. It’s just no carb. So you know nothing literally nothing about pop culture.

The reason why I said a cheese sandwich because that's what I had for lunch, so...

对,生酮它是要吃很多高脂, 但是低碳的东西.

But anyhow for example, even like drinking milk, nobody drinks milk anymore when they go to starbucks or any cafe, they need to have almond milk, oat milk because apparently they're allergic to milk which they never were.

I always remember when I went to Poland once, and I wanted to go and get a coffee and I traveled around the country for about a week or so. And I kept going into a chain coffee shop. And I kept learning all of these Polish phrases for coffee and there was always like one phrase that they would add. But I just kind of said... had to say, I'm sorry, I don't speak Polish. And I spent ages learning it and they kept asking me, do you want almond milk? No, I want milk that comes from a Moo~~. So I was literally in a cafe in Poland going Moo~~.  I think they understood, but I think they just like my impression of a cow.

Yeah, but back to the topic, a lot of these are trends, not even trends, they're fads, f-a-d-s, they're just passing trends, exactly, this year something is going to be popular next year it would be another thing.

I think one reason why we have all these 网红美食 or 网红饮食 is because people still have fomo, fear of missing out.

Yes. And there's also the whole concept of being a foodie .

Foodie almost becomes a dirty word.

I know. The thing is it’s a little bit overused in China, because we do use it in English, but we don't use it as much as it's used in China.

因为很多人会觉得foodie是吃货, but吃货in Chinese can mean a glutton, but also like a foodie that who's in the know.

Oh Yeah.

Or in English context is almost exclusively people who know good food. Yeah. Yeah, 这种资深吃货就技术流的那种吃货

It’s like what we would use to say gourmet.

Yeah, but gourmet sounds so pretentious.

It sounds very, very pretentious.

Yeah, there are many people who are self-proclaimed foodies including me and they're gonna post things their comments about food and new trends and all that.

Yeah, let's have a look at some of these trends that I really don't understand.

Okay. First of all, you mentioned rainbow. This is a health thing. It's like eat a rainbow meaning that... I think it's a nutritionist trend or a nutritional trend. It's like you're supposed to consume food of different color group.

Yeah, but you also have the whole rainbow cake as well, don’t you...

Okay, no, but that's completely different. In that idea, if they're not natural rainbow color, then the rainbow cake is just with a lot of food dye, which is disgusting. I have seen that . I'm sorry who would find, apart from blueberry which is actually almost black, who would find anything blue appetizing.

That is true.

Blue is not an appetizing color, or pink. Pink is all right. I'm alright with pink, but I ain't gonna eat anything blue.

Pink in a cake...

Strawberry? Haven't you ever eat strawberry .

Yeah, but that's more red.

No, if it's in whipped cream, then it’s not...

It's red, strawberry jam is red, proper strawberry is red .

Whatever.这种彩红色的食物对吧?

Yeah.

But you know health food wise they do have the idea of eat a rainbow, but that's more natural color of the food. So for example, you eat pumpkin for the yellowish orange color. They eat like kale and lettuce for the green. And so on so forth.

But then again, you got the complete opposite, you got the really over the top desserts.

Have you ever heard of something called freak shake?

I have seen it.

怪兽奶昔, 如果大家没有听说过去查一下, freak shakes are basically, well as the name suggests, you put all sorts of things in your milkshake. 奶昔里面加了各种各样的料and then top it up with all sorts of crazy desserts.

Yes.

That just looks like a leftover from a bakery.

I have seen it and it's just one of those things that even I, and I got really sweet tooth, even I think it's a bit too much.

Honestly, even having a look at that gives me a toothache.

Even looking at that is enough to put on a pound really, it's just so so ...

Because it looks like it's got 5,000 calories.

Oh, it probably has.

But then the whole oversized trend has been there for a few years now. A decade maybe.

Everything normal, if you make it oversized, it becomes a trend. Oversized croissant, which is the size of half a person, the oversized donuts...

Oh yeah, and I remember used to have cronuts as well, croissant and donut.

That's another thing. Do you know they also have cruffin, croissant and muffin?

There's also Crookies.

Croissant cookies.

Yeah.

How does that work?

It's absolutely disgusting.

Okay? Probably there's a reason why it hasn't... it's taken this long to be invented to be honest.

Yeah, this is another thing, right? It's the combination of two completely generic stuff and create the next one. I've had some crazy combinations. You like tacos, right?

Love tacos.

I've had 麻婆豆腐 taco.

That doesn't sound too bad.

It's actually pretty good.

I've had 麻婆豆腐nachos once.

And 麻婆豆腐 is good in anything really.

Yeah, those麻婆豆腐 nachos I had those in Malaysia and they were really nice.

Okay, so this is combination of unlikely food.

Yeah.
