So what are we going to talk about today?

Well, next month I'm going on my holidays. So let's talk about travel.

Big topic and I know this is a topic that both of us have a lot to say about.

I absolutely love traveling! Traveling for me is... I know it's meant to be a luxury but really I love traveling so much, even if I don't have much money, I would still want to spend that money on traveling.

So other people spend it on bread, you will spend it on traveling.

Yes, and hopefully I will get bread when I'm traveling.

That's the dream, isn't it?

Yes.

In this whole discussion, I think it will be like a few episodes of discussion and this will cover pretty much all aspects of traveling from the desire to travel, to transport, to packing, to things we do in the destination and then also like accommodation, things to watch out for, so on and so forth. So if you're a keen traveler, you're in for treat.

Well, I would say let's start with the desire to travel.

Well, the desire to travel. I've heard of this expression, which is really funny, it's having itchy feet.

英文里如果直接把它翻译成中文就是脚痒痒. You sure that's not like a foot fungus issue.

No, it's not, having itchy feet means it's the desire that you really want to travel, so you would say to people I'm really getting itchy feet, I really want to go on holiday or I really want to go traveling.

I suppose put in that context, everyone would know that you want to move.

Yes.

You basically want to get out of your routine and travel and see more of the world, I've also heard of a word wanderlust which is supposed to be German, right?

Yeah, it's... "wander" means sort of walk around, and "lust" is desire, so essentially is the desire to walk around. For example, if you're in a new place that desired that you want to go and explore everything that is a form of wanderlust.

So you would say I have wanderlust.

Yeah. 

I see. Another slightly strange and perhaps a bit unsightly expression is get bitten by the travel bug.

Yeah, to be honest, it's a bit old, but people still say it.

Older people probably say it.

Yeah, older people… It's once you've gone travelling, then you just want to keep travelling.

It's like you get infected…

With an illness or a disease...that you want to travel.

So all of these expressions are about desire to travel, I think to be honest, traveling is not necessarily for me like going on a holiday.

It's more about experiencing new things, not just like go to seaside and relax.

Yep, I really don't like beach holidays. Sometimes they're okay, but if I go traveling I want to see things, I want to do things. So when I go traveling I normally go to cities.

City breaks.

Yeah. Lots of city breaks.

Having said that let's talk about different types of traveling.

Okay.

By the way 安澜 in Chinese we always say 自助游 is there such a thing in English that you can translate into 自助游?

No, you can say maybe independent travel. But to be honest, if you say to someone, I'm going traveling next month for example, the whole idea is that you are traveling alone.

Most people would just assume you're 自助游. You have the opposite. The opposite would be group tour.

Yeah, but this is not very common because you have to think for English people, you can go anywhere in the world and you'll be able to find people to speak English. You don't really need that level of people kind of looking after you, kind of making sure you're okay.

But having said that, group tours are quite popular with older people, particularly if they go into more exotic places.

Older people or maybe like school kids.

Normal average adults would just travel and then because you also had a longer history of traveling for leisure. Therefore people are very used to the idea of 自助游，therefore that's not a thing.

The first time I ever went on an airplane to go abroad was when I was about 2 or 3 years old.

OK. I don't think you remember any of that.

Not really, no.

By the way, 安澜, I've also heard of an expression package tour.

Yes.

Package打包嘛, Package tour. Is that different from group tour?

Package tour or a package holiday is when you go to a holiday resort and everything is arranged for you. So all the food, drink are all included. And it's the same as a package tour. So for example, a group tour, you might still get maybe 1 or 2 days on your own, whereas a package tour, everything is arranged for you.

And you pay like a lump sum.

你一次性给钱就是全包全部给你安排好的那种. Have you ever been on any group tour or package tour?

No. I've been on like group excursions where you go out for maybe a day.

Excursion is like shorter.

Yeah, much, much shorter, but package tours they're not really that popular. Package holidays are popular for places like Spain or Portugal.

If you just want to sit on the beach, if you just want to relax, then a lot of people go on package holidays, or older people go on package tours mainly on cruises.

对了 就那个 cruises. 也就是游轮, 就老头老太比较喜欢 because they don't have to move around a lot.

No.

It saves them a lot of energy and they get to see more things.

And it's all inclusive as well.

Yeah. But the opposite of everything being arranged for you is when you have to deal with everything, especially if you don't have a lot of money, like backpacking,

Yes.

backpacking的中文也叫背包客安澜知道吧. 

Yep. 

Is backpacking generally talking about budget traveling? 就是比较穷游的这种.

Pretty much. So backpacking is essentially you got everything you own on your back, you're staying in youth hostels; and maybe you don't really have a plan, you just travel until you run out of money, or you just travel from one place to another as long as you get to the final destination on time. It doesn't really matter what you're doing in the meantime.

I think especially maybe 10, 20 years ago, backpacking was very popular for like young people from Europe. They used to backpack a lot in Southeast Asia.  That's a thing, that's like a trend.

Yeah. That's the sort of gap year travel that before you go off to university, you go backpacking for a year.

Gap year可能有很多小伙伴听过就是这个间隔年, they often joke about the fact that we don't really have gap year. If you have gap year, you probably will have to drop out of university.

Yeah.

And by the way, that really famous travel book Lonely Planet...

Yes

《孤独星球》这个书它还专门出了一个系列叫做什么 on a shoe string.

Yes, like Europe, traveling around Europe on a shoestring, shoestring就鞋带 and that I've checked because the first time I saw it, I thought this is a weird expression, and it seems to me, traveling on a shoestring seems to me traveling on a very tight budget. 

Yeah. But the thing is you can do anything on a shoestring. You can go out on a shoestring, you can eat on a shoestring, but the most common is travel on a shoestring. And that means literally you don't have much money. So you're trying to do as much as you can with as little money as possible.

I bet you have done some traveling on shoestring or budget traveling.

Oh, yes, loads. So when I was at university, it was November. And I was able to get very, very cheap flights, so I just used to go to place like actually Poland, I went to Finland, Estonia, Romania... I just went to very cheap destinations and just had my backpack, stay in a youth hostel. It was great fun.

In bitter cold weather, that's why it's cheap.

Exactly.

It's not high season.

Yes, but at least I still saw these places.

I guess so, especially when you're young, you don't have a lot, but you still want to travel like 安澜, then you will try to do budget traveling or backpacking or travel on a shoestring.

I think nowadays young people in China are also doing that a lot more. Also there are people taking road trips. I know you don't drive but I love road trips now.

I love road trips.

It's just someone else is driving.

Is that a reminder that when we go around Europe I should drive.

Yes.

OK. And lately I've also heard of this really, really bizarre traveling called dark tourism.

Yes. That's become relatively popular in recent years. To be honest, I don't really like it.

It's still really controversial, isn't it?

It's the idea that you're going to visit places like war zones or places associated with tragedies.

Like genocide, like the concentration camps, like Chernobyl, some people go to Chernobyl.

Yeah, so for example, saying about Poland, the city of Krakow, which we're gonna go to, right next to Krakow is Auschwitz.

奥斯维辛集中营。

Dark tourism就是有一些人旅行的目的地不是名山大川, 而是这种特别黑暗, 就是跟死亡跟屠杀, 包括跟灾难有关的这些地点, 不是说这些地点不能去, 而是只是说如果你的focus全部在这样子的very, very dark travels and very, very dark destinations, and also the reason why you wanna go is simply because you want the novelty effect. I think it's being rather disrespectful.

It's the idea that you want to do something that is different, but...

I know some influencers do that, which I find to be in rather poor taste.

Yeah, that is very controversial, very controversial.
