deep-six

If you deep-six something, you discard or get rid of it, especially in a casual or secretive way. It can also mean to cancel or abandon a project, plan, or idea.

The term “deep-six” has its roots in nautical jargon.

In the past, sailors used a line (a rope with a lead weight at the end) to measure the depth of water.

When the line indicated that the water was six fathoms (about 36 feet or 11 meters) deep, it was referred to as “deep-six.”

At this depth, it was suitable for dumping unwanted items overboard, as they would sink and be unlikely to resurface.
