船上货物基本完整、食物淡水充足、私人物品与钱财均未丢失,船长日志最后记录停留在 11 月 25 日,仅缺少一艘救生艇、导航仪器与官方文件。

Suddenly, the lookout shouted. Something strange appeared on the horizon — a ship drifting alone, its sails partly set but hanging limp. It moved in an odd, lifeless way, like a ghost on the water. No smoke rose from the galley. No voices carried across the waves. No one stood at the wheel.
The ship did not look damaged. It was not sinking. Yet something felt terribly wrong. The captain of the Dei Gratia, David Morehouse, ordered signals. No reply came. He recognised the vessel at once. It was the Mary Celeste.

What the small boarding party discovered when they climbed aboard would become one of the greatest maritime mysteries of all time — a puzzle that still chills people more than 150 years later.
Let us go back to the beginning.
The Mary Celeste began life under another name: the Amazon. She was built in 1861 in Nova Scotia, Canada — a strong wooden brigantine made for long ocean journeys. From her very first voyage, bad luck seemed to follow her like a shadow. Her first captain fell ill and died at sea. Storms damaged her again and again. She changed owners several times. Some sailors whispered that the ship was cursed, that she carried misfortune in her very timbers.
In 1872, new owners took her over, repaired her, and gave her a fresh name: Mary Celeste. Her captain this time was Benjamin Spooner Briggs, an experienced American sailor from a respected seafaring family. Briggs was not a reckless man. He was careful, deeply religious, and known for running a tight, disciplined ship. For this voyage, he made an unusual choice: he brought his wife, Sarah, and their two-year-old daughter, Sophia, with him. The little family would travel together across the Atlantic.

The cargo was 1,701 barrels of industrial alcohol — a dangerous, highly flammable liquid used in factories. It was loaded carefully in New York. The destination was Genoa, Italy. On 7 November 1872, the Mary Celeste left New York Harbour with ten people on board: Captain Briggs, his wife and daughter, and seven crew members. The weather was fair. The ship looked strong. No one imagined it would become a floating ghost.
They were never seen alive again.
Almost a month later, on 4 December, the Dei Gratia spotted the Mary Celeste drifting near the Azores Islands, hundreds of miles from her last known position. Captain Morehouse was surprised and worried. He knew Briggs personally — the two captains had met before and even shared a meal in New York. He ordered a small boat lowered and sent three men to investigate.
The boarding party rowed across the choppy water, hearts beating faster as they drew closer. The Mary Celeste sat strangely still on the waves. When they climbed the rope ladder and stepped onto the deck, an eerie silence greeted them. The only sounds were the creak of the masts and the soft slap of water against the hull. No footsteps. The ship was completely deserted. There were no signs of violence — no blood, no broken furniture, no smashed windows. The cargo barrels were still safely stored below, though one or two had leaked slightly. The crew’s personal belongings lay untouched: clothes folded neatly, a pipe resting on the captain’s table as if he had just set it down. In the galley, a pot of food sat cold but prepared. Sewing work lay half-finished on a chair — tiny stitches for a child’s garment. A child’s shoe rested quietly on the cabin floor. It felt as if everyone had simply stood up and walked away in the middle of ordinary life.
But the lifeboat was missing. The ship’s chronometer and sextant — vital tools for navigation — were gone. So were the official papers. Some water had collected in the hold, but not enough to sink the ship. One pump had been taken apart, perhaps for repairs. A few sails were torn, but the Mary Celeste was still seaworthy. The last entry in the captain’s logbook was dated 25 November. It placed the ship near the Azores — far from where she was found drifting.

Where had the ten people gone? Why would they abandon a perfectly good ship in the middle of the ocean?
When the Mary Celeste was towed into Gibraltar, the authorities wasted no time. Maritime law said the crew of the Dei Gratia could claim a reward for saving the abandoned ship. But officials grew suspicious. Had Morehouse and his men murdered Briggs and the others to steal the salvage money? An investigation began at once.
The Attorney General examined every inch of the ship. He questioned the sailors for hours. He tested the cargo. But no evidence of crime appeared — no bloodstains, no bullet holes, no signs of a struggle. In the end, the Dei Gratia crew was cleared. They received only a small payment. The Mary Celeste was returned to her owners and continued sailing. Yet her story had already begun to spread like wildfire.
Newspapers printed wild tales. Some claimed the decks were covered in blood. Others spoke of explosions or sea monsters. In 1884, a young writer named Arthur Conan Doyle published a fictional story that mixed in murder and revenge. Many readers believed it was true. Fact and fiction became hopelessly tangled.

But what do we actually know?
We know the ship was sound. We know the cargo was mostly safe. We know the crew left in an orderly way, taking the lifeboat, navigation tools, and important papers. And we know they vanished forever.
So what might have happened?
One popular theory centres on the dangerous cargo. Industrial alcohol gives off strong, invisible fumes. Experts now believe these fumes could have built up in the hold. A small explosion or even the fear of one — perhaps without leaving obvious burn marks — might have terrified Captain Briggs. Thinking the ship was about to blow up, he could have ordered everyone into the lifeboat, tying it to the Mary Celeste with a long rope so they could return later.
If the rope snapped in rough seas, the lifeboat would drift away. The Mary Celeste, still under sail, would continue alone. This explains why valuable items were left behind and why the ship showed so little damage.

Another idea points to a sudden water spout — a powerful, twisting column of sea water that can strike without warning. Such a frightening event could cause instant panic. Or perhaps Captain Briggs misread the water level in the hold and believed the ship was slowly sinking. In the confusion of the moment, he chose a quick evacuation, planning to return once the danger passed.
But the Atlantic is vast and unforgiving. A small lifeboat packed with ten people would not last long in open water. No trace of it was ever found.
Darker theories have also appeared over the years. Some suggest mutiny — maybe the crew turned against the captain. Yet there was no sign of fighting. Others blame pirates, but nothing valuable was stolen. Wilder stories — alien abduction, ghostly forces, sea monsters — still appear in books and films. They are exciting, but they have no real evidence.
The truth is probably simpler — and more tragic.

They showed that a sudden pressure wave could frighten a crew without leaving obvious damage. Computer models of the weather in November 1872 also confirm storms and rough seas were moving through the area.
Most historians now lean toward a panic-driven evacuation caused by fear of explosion or sinking. Yet certainty remains out of reach.
And perhaps that is why the Mary Celeste still haunts us more than 150 years later.
The ship herself sailed on for another thirteen years. In 1885, she was deliberately run aground in an insurance fraud scheme — a sad, almost ordinary end. But it is not her final wreck that we remember.
