The Bermuda Triangle

Imagine flying over a deep blue ocean. The sky is clear. The instruments look normal. The radio is working. And then—without warning—something goes wrong. The signal disappears. The plane vanishes. No wreckage. No survivors. No final message.

This is the legend of the Bermuda Triangle—an area of the Atlantic Ocean that has been blamed for mysterious disappearances of ships and aircraft for decades.

✏ Fly over 飞越

✏ Insruments

✏ Vanish

✏ Wreckage 残骸

✏ Survivors

✏ Bermuda Triangle

✏ Atlantic Ocean

✏ Decades 数十年

It is sometimes called the Devil’s Triangle. Some believe it hides supernatural forces. Others say it is nothing more than a myth created by writers and journalists. But the stories are real enough to make anyone feel uneasy.

The Bermuda Triangle is not marked on official maps. It has no clear borders. However, it is usually described as the area between Miami, Bermuda, and San Juan. Together, these three points form a rough triangle covering more than 1 million square kilometres of ocean.

It is one of the busiest shipping routes in the world. Cruise ships, cargo vessels, private yachts, and commercial planes pass through it every day.

And yet, the legend says that this region is different. That something strange happens there.

✏ Devil

✏ Supernatural forces

✏ Uneasy 不安的

✏ Borders 边界

✏ San Juan

✏ Shipping routes

✏ Cruise ships 游轮

✏ Yachts 游艇

The mystery truly began in December 1945.

Five American military planes, known as Flight 19, took off from a naval base in Florida for a routine training exercise. The weather was good. The pilots were experienced. Their mission was simple: fly east, complete a training route, and return.

But during the flight, the instructor, Lieutenant Charles Taylor, reported something unusual. His compass was not working correctly. He seemed confused about his position. Radio messages became unclear.

✏ Took off 起飞(Take off)

✏  Naval base

✏  Routine training

✏  Pilots

✏  Compass

“We don’t know where we are,” he said. “Everything looks wrong.”

Soon, communication was lost completely.

A rescue plane was sent to search for them. That plane also disappeared.

In total, 14 men from Flight 19 and 13 men from the rescue aircraft were never found. No wreckage was officially recovered.

For many people, this event confirmed that the Bermuda Triangle was dangerous.

But was it truly mysterious?

Later investigations suggested that Lieutenant Taylor may have become disoriented and mistaken the Florida Keys for another island group. It is possible that the planes ran out of fuel and crashed into the sea. The Atlantic can be deep and violent. Wreckage can sink quickly or break apart.

Still, the story of Flight 19 captured the public imagination. It became one of the most famous disappearances in aviation history.

✏ Disoriented

✏ Florida Keys

✏ Ran out of fuel

✏ Crashed into the sea

✏ Aviation history 航空史

Another famous case occurred much earlier, in 1918.

The USS Cyclops, a large American cargo ship, left Barbados carrying over 300 men and a heavy load of manganese ore. It was sailing toward Baltimore.

It never arrived.

No distress signal was sent. No signs of damage were reported. The ship simply vanished.

With 309 people on board, it remains the single largestloss of life in U.S. Naval history not related to combat.

✏ USS Cyclops

✏ Manganese ore

✏ Distress signal

✏ Single largest 最大的

✏ Loss of life 丧命

✏ Naval history 海军史

Over the years, people have suggested everything from German submarines to sea monsters. But historians believe that the ship may have been overloaded. Combined with possible structural weaknesses and rough weather, it may have sunk suddenly.

Again, tragedy—but perhaps not supernatural.

✏ Submarines

✏ Sea monsters 海怪

✏ Overloaded

✏ Rough weather

✏ Sunk 沉没

✏ Tragedy

✏ Supernatural

So how did the Bermuda Triangle become such a powerful legend?

The term "Bermuda Triangle" was popularised in the 1960s by writers looking for unusual stories. In 1974, a book called The Bermuda Triangle by Charles Berlitz became an international bestseller. It described mysterious vanishings and suggested explanations involving Atlantis, alien technology, and strange energy forces.

The book was exciting. It was dramatic. And it sold millions of copies.

However, critics quickly pointed out problems. Some stories were exaggerated. Others were based on incorrect information. In some cases, ships reported as "mysteriously missing" had actually sunk during storms far outside the triangle.

✏ Popularised

✏ International bestseller

✏ Dramatic

✏ Critics

✏ Exaggerated

Journalist Larry Kusche published a detailed investigation showing that many of the supposed mysteries could be explained by bad weather, human error, or mechanical failure.

Still, once an idea captures the imagination, it is hard to erase.

✏ Human error

✏ Mechanical failure

✏ Erase

Let us consider possible natural explanations.

First, weather.

The Bermuda Triangle lies in a region known for sudden storms and powerful hurricanes. Tropical weather systems can develop quickly and become violent without much warning. In earlier centuries, ships had limited forecasting tools. A storm at sea could easily destroy a vessel without leaving survivors.

Second, ocean currents.

One of the strongest currents in the world, the Gulf Stream, flows through this region. It moves quickly and can carry wreckage far away from the crash site. This makes it difficult to locate remains of ships or aircraft.

✏ Hurricane 飓风

✏ Tropical weather

✏ Forecasting 预测

✏ Ocean currents 洋流

✏ Locate 确定...的位置

Third, geography.

The Atlantic Ocean in this area is extremely deep. In some places, the sea floor drops sharply into underwater trenches. If a plane or ship sinks, it may disappear beyond reach.

Fourth, human error.

Navigation mistakes are common in both aviation and sailing. Compasses can be affected by natural magnetic variations. The Bermuda Triangle is one of the few places where true north and magnetic north align, which may confuse inexperienced navigators.

And finally, statistics.

Because the region is heavily travelled, accidents are more likely simply due to traffic volume. When many ships and planes pass through an area, some accidents are expected.

✏ Sea floor 海床

✏ Magnetic variations

✏ Traffic volume

In fact, insurance companies do not charge higher rates for ships sailing through the Bermuda Triangle. Major shipping companies and airlines do not avoid it. If the area were truly dangerous beyond normal levels, they would change their routes.

And yet, the mystery remains powerful.

Why?

Perhaps because the ocean itself feels mysterious.

The sea is vast and unpredictable. Even today, with satellites and GPS, it can feel empty and endless. When something disappears into that space, it feels different from a car accident on land. There are no witnesses. No final explanations. Just water.

There is also something deeply human about wanting a larger explanation. When faced with tragedy, people search for meaning. A simple mechanical failure feels unsatisfying. A secret energy field feels dramatic.

The Bermuda Triangle has become a symbol of the unknown. It represents our fear of nature, our curiosity about unexplained events, and our love of mystery stories.

Over time, the legend has grown larger than the facts.

Today, scientists generally agree that there is no evidence of supernatural forces in the Bermuda Triangle. No magnetic black holes. No alien technology. No lost city of Atlantis creating strange energy waves.

The disappearances that did occur can be explained by known causes: weather, navigation errors, equipment failure, or simple bad luck.

✏ Vast

✏ Unpredictable

✏ Satellites 卫星

✏ Witness 目击者

✏ Energy field 能量场

✏ Curiosity

✏ Supernatural force

✏ Magnetic black holes

But even if the science is clear, the story continues.

Movies, books, and television shows still use the Bermuda Triangle as a setting for adventure and danger. It remains part of popular culture. It still captures imagination.

Because in the end, the Bermuda Triangle is not just about geography. It is about mystery.

It is about standing at the edge of the unknown and wondering what might lie beyond.

Imagine again that clear blue sky. The steady sound of an engine. The calm ocean stretching to the horizon. Everything appears normal.

And then—silence.

Whether the explanation is natural or not, that silence is powerful.

The Bermuda Triangle reminds us that even in a modern world filled with technology, there are still places where stories grow larger than facts.

And sometimes, the greatest mystery is not what happened—but why we continue to believe that something impossible might still be out there, waiting beneath the waves.
